Identifying invisible elements in Microsoft Word

Sometimes it is difficult to identify how many spaces are between words, or to recognize other invisible elements. In this case you need to enable non-printing characters. Simply click the “Non-printing characters” button in the Home ribbon. This will display multiple symbols in the document.

These are not displayed on the printed page, but can be helpful for formatting. The dot indicates a space.

This can be helpful when you have two spaces, even though only one should be present. This symbol stands for a new paragraph. Since I have an empty paragraph here, I should delete it to close this space. I can also see page, section and column breaks. When you are done, just turn off the non-printing characters.
