Creating a table of contents in Microsoft Word

You can simply make a table of contents in Word by choosing headings 1, 2 and 3 from the style picker.

Select your top-level elements. For every top level element, specify the Heading 1 style, which can be found on the Home Ribbon tab.

Set your second-level elements to Heading 2 and all other elements to Level 3.

When you are finished, place the cursor where you want the Table of Contents to appear, and then on the References tab, click Table of Contents and select Automatic Table 1.

Your Table of Contents will be generated including page numbers.
